Session 38: Task B: plan and calibrate

Learning outcomes

  • Turn the Task B brief into a plan with thresholds, fault behaviour and a driver design
  • Build and prove the sensor, display and alarm subsystems
  • Calibrate the temperature reading against a reference

Kit and components

  • Uno, breadboard, 10 kΩ NTC, 10 kΩ resistor, I2C LCD, red LED and 330 Ω resistor, 5 V buzzer
  • BC337 transistor and 1 kΩ base resistor, or a logic-level MOSFET
  • Reference thermometer, ice pack and multimeter
  • Printed Task B brief and criteria grid

    Plan check

    Learners finish the criteria, circuit diagram with the driver stage, BOM and test table headings. Check and initial each plan before wiring.

  3. 0:4550 min
    Build

    Subsystems and calibration

    Learners prove the thermistor reading, LCD and alarm driver separately and record at least two calibration points.

  4. 1:3525 min
    Build

    Start the main sketch

    Combine the reading and the display with millis() timing.

Every learner has an approved plan, proven subsystems and a calibration table with at least two points.

Extension for fast finishers

Start the hysteresis and sensor-fault logic.

Catch-up path

Learners whose driver stage does not work rebuild it from the driver lesson before continuing.

Facilitator notes

  • Check the driver stage on every bench before a buzzer is connected: base resistor present, emitter to GND, buzzer between +5 V and the collector.
