Week 8 · Sensors & Task B
Session 39: Task B: build and demonstrate
Learning outcomes
- Demonstrate the alarm under every required condition
- Show fail-safe behaviour when the sensor is disconnected
- Explain hysteresis and the Beta conversion
Kit and components
- Task B circuit from S38
- Reference thermometer and ice pack
- Printed Task B criteria grids
Pre-reading about 10 min
Students read these on their phones before class. They are listed on the student Before class page.
Session plan
- 0:005 minDiscuss
Start-of-session check
- 0:0570 minAssess
Finish and test
Learners complete the sketch and test table: below 28 °C, rising through 30 °C, falling between 30 °C and 28 °C, below 28 °C again, and the sensor unplugged.
- 1:1535 minAssess
Demonstrations
Warm the sensor by hand to trip the alarm, let it cool and check it stays on until 28 °C, then unplug the thermistor. Ask two questions.
- 1:5010 minWrap-up
Results
Checkpoint: ready to move on?
Every learner has a marked Task B grid, with feedback and a reassessment date where needed.
Extension for fast finishers
Log the temperature every 10 s to Serial as CSV and plot it in a spreadsheet.
Catch-up path
Learners marked NYC prepare the missed criteria for the S49 reassessment using the sensor lessons.
Homework and practice
Pre-reading for S40.
Facilitator notes
- Cooling from 30 °C takes time - have an ice pack ready for the falling-temperature test.
