Week 10 · Extension & Project Planning

Session 48: Extension workshop: libraries and project modules

Teach & buildFlex120 minLesson 30: Build Your Own Library · Lesson 31: HC-SR04 Ultrasonic Distance · Lesson 32: 4x4 Matrix Keypad · Lesson 33: MFRC522 RFID Access Log (VMA202)

Learning outcomes

  • Evaluate a module for a final project by building its lesson example
  • Package reusable code as an Arduino library
  • Record a module's wiring, library and limits in the project plan

Kit and components

  • Module stations: HC-SR04, 4x4 keypad, MFRC522 RFID with SD shield
  • Uno, breadboard and jumpers per pair

Pre-reading about 20 min

Students read these on their phones before class. They are listed on the student Before class page.

  1. Lesson 31: What the HC-SR04 does
  2. Lesson 32: Matrix scanning
  3. Lesson 33: What this project does

    How to evaluate a module

Check supply voltage, pinout, library author and one worked example before committing a project to a module.

  3. 0:2580 min
    Stations

    Module stations

Pairs visit the stations their projects need and build the lesson example, recording wiring, library and one measured limit. Students not using a module package their thermistor code as a library.

  4. 1:4515 min
    Wrap-up

    Update project parts lists

Checkpoint: ready to move on?

Each learner has recorded the wiring, library and limits of every module in their final project, or has built the SimpleThermistor library.

Extension for fast finishers

Combine a station module with an actuator from the kit.

Catch-up path

Learners with no module needs work on outstanding Code Along or reassessment preparation.

Homework and practice

Prepare the final project plan for review in S50.

Facilitator notes

  • Issue station modules only against approved proposals, and sign them out.
  • Flex session: in a shorter course, issue modules at the S50 plan review instead.
